Planting Apple Orchard, October 2021

The 4 acre south facing Squerryes walled garden was built in the 18th Century and blends into the landscape just one mile from Squerryes Court.  Fruit and vegetables were grown here for generations until, the First World War when sadly, staff issues resulted in the site coming out of production.  More recently the garden has been used as a horse paddock, but we are steadily bringing parts of the walled garden back into production with the dream of supplying an increasing amount of Estate Produce to our Estate deli and restaurant.

An important milestone in our journey was to plant a 50 tree apple orchard.  We carefully chose a mixture of varieties to lengthen the season as much we could.  The first small crop should be ready to sample in the restaurant and shop in autumn 2022.
